Stat prints out the contents of an inode as they appear to
stat(2) in a human-readable format.

Here is a sample output from stat:

$ stat /
  File: "/"
  Size: 512     Allocated Blocks: 4     Filetype: Directory
  Mode: (0755/drwxr-xr-x)       Uid: (0/root) Gid: (0/wheel)
Device: 1024    Inode: 2        Links: 17
Access: Sun Feb 16 14:50:39 1997
Modify: Tue Feb  4 16:59:09 1997
